Viewing Recommendations for Ironman!
Below is a quick breakdown of IRONMAN and where you can
cheer and engage with athletes on the course.
Remember to use the tracking tools to find your favorite
athletes and teams:
You can also track all athletes through the Ironman website
or the IronMobile App.
Krissy’s bib number is 58.
Swim:
Monona Terrace – whether you are on top the building, on the
bike path between the building and the lake or on a helix on either side – you
will have the perfect view of the swim.
All swimmers begin in the water with a cannon shot at 7am.
(mTT teams will start at 6:45)
Upon completion of the swim, all racers will jog up the
north helix to transition in the Monona terrace parking structure and once they
transition to the bike, they will ride down the south helix and down John
Nolan. Either side of the Monona Terrace provides a unique opportunity for
cheering and spectating both the swim and the bike.
Krissy and John expect to be out of the water by
8:30am.
Bike:
The bike course consists of a stem out to Verona, two loops
through Southwest Dane county and then the stem back into downtown. Please
remember that many roads will be closed and/or used for bikers --- so plan
ahead to find alternate routes as needed! For
your safety and the safety of the bikers it is best to find routes to your cheering
destinations that do not include the race route.
Many communities and establishments have embraced the route
over the years --- you will find unique cheering opportunities that often look
like a tailgate party! Hills are always a great place to spectate as the bikers
are going a little slower and certainly need the boost of support! Depending on
your preference you can pick a spot and hang out for the day or bounce around
to different viewpoints – just make sure you leave yourself enough time and DRIVE
SAFELY!
Recommendations for viewing locations:
Mt Horeb – Hwy 92 through downtown (great hill for
cheering!) [approx. mile 28 and mile 73]
The Red Mouse – 3738 County Rd P [approx.
mile 43 and mile 82]
Riley’s - 8205 Klevenville Riley Rd [approx.
mile 47 and mile 87]
Midtown Road (great hill for cheering!) [approx. mile 53 and mile 92]
Downtown Verona (corner of Main Street and Verona Ave.) [approx. mile 58 and mile 96]
Krissy and Patrick are estimating a speed of 13.5 –
14.5 mph – most likely on the bike between 8:45 and 5:00pm.
Run:
The run course winds through downtown and the UW campus with
a ton of view opportunities in and around state street. Remember each racer
will do the loop twice and in many cases cross the same location as many as 4
times. Please remember that many roads will be closed and/or used for bikers
--- so plan ahead to find alternate routes as needed! For your safety and the safety of the bikers it is best to
find routes to your cheering destinations that do not include the race route.
Note – there is an awesome aid station out near Picnic Point
/ UW Hospital that will be supported by some SSM staff and volunteers.
Definitely a great place to see racers too as it is an out and back course.
Depending on your preference you can pick a spot and hang out for the evening
or bounce around to different viewpoints – just make sure you leave yourself
enough time and DRIVE SAFELY!
Recommendations for viewing locations:
Both ends of State Street – racers will be on State Street 4
times so if you rotate between a couple of blocks you can cheer very easily
without getting in your care at all.
Camp Randall – racers actually go into the stadium – but
spectators can cheer at the South end of the stadium and see racers multiple
times.
Picnic Point – easy parking near UW hospital – lots of
viewing opportunities.
The finish line – at 13.1 and 26.2 this is a GREAT place to
be! Since it is two loops – athletes SEE the finish line at 13.1 and have to
turn around and do ANOTHER loop. These athletes need your support and energy!
Krissy and Lisa are estimating 11-13 minute miles and
the WHOLE TEAM will be crossing the finish line together before midnight!
